Composition in a picture is the
combonation of the various elements into a whole. The most common types
of composition are:
symmetrical - asymmetrical enclosed - open unifed - non-unified |
In symmetrical composition, the elemens are arranged around a central line or axis and covey a sense of order. In asymmetrical composition elements are off center and suggest a sense of disorder.
Enclosed composition arranges the elements inside the frame. Its main aim is to harmonize disparate aspects of the picture into a coherent whole (e.g. to express completeness). In open composition, the elements extend past the frame. The aim of this composition is to pull the elements apart (e.g. to express tension, dynamism).
In unified composition, different elements interact within the frame of the picture to covey a sense of stability. In non-unified composition, shapes and objects are treated more individually. Separate elements are more important than the whole and convey a sense of individuality.
